Jen Nance's Single Gives Softball Doubleheader Sweep at Albright

(Game 1) / (Game 2)

Junior Jen Nance (Lansdowne, PA) lined a single in the 10th inning to score sophomore Valarie Perretti (Clayton, NJ) and give Widener a 6-5 Commonwealth Conference victory over Albright that followed a 6-2 triumph in the opener in Reading, PA.

Perretti was placed on second in the top of the 10th per international tie-break rules and Nance led off by singling up the middle for the lead.  That lead was preserved in the bottom of the 10th when a squeeze bunt by Miriah Wilson was fielded by junior second baseman Colleen Orsborn (Drexel Hill, PA), who threw home to junior catcher Shelby Mackintosh (Lumberton, NJ) and nailed Alysa Romero at the plate for the second out.

Sophomore Jackie Korang (Delran, NJ) then got Brandy Lagomarsino to ground out for the save for Widener (8-4, 2-0 CC).  Drexel Hill, PA junior Christine Mattis (3-1) got the victory, allowing five runs – three earned -- and 10 hits over nine innings with four strikeouts.

Junior Casey Hargadon (Wallingford, PA) had two hits and two RBI with Mackintosh, Mattis and freshman Carissa Harris (Douglassville, PA) also getting two hits apiece.

Melissa Alimonti (0-1) was tagged with the loss, giving up an unearned run and four hits over 5 1/3 innings for Albright (2-6, 0-2).  Lagomarsino and Jack Bohanan each had two hits and two RBI.

In the first game, Mackintosh ripped a bases-clearing double in the top of the first to give Widener a 3-0 lead.  The margin grew to 5-1 in the third on Korang's RBI single and Mackintosh scoring on a balk.

Mackintosh closed with three hits, two doubles and three RBI.  Orsborn and Harris recorded two hits apiece.

Korang (5-1) ran her winning streak to five games by pitching seven strong innings, surrendering two runs – one earned – and seven hits over seven innings with two strikeouts.

Stephanie Romano (2-2) was charged with six runs and 11 hits over six innings for Albright.  Lagomarsino ended with three hits.

Widener is home Thursday against Swarthmore for a doubleheader which begins at 5:00 pm.
