Softball Sweeps Doubleheader at Wesley

Widener in game one against Wesley notched a 5-4 victory before posting a 7-2 triumph in the nightcap in Dover, DE.
 
Freshman Carissa Harris (Douglassville, PA) in game one closed with four hits.  After sophomore Jackie Korang (Delran, NJ) lined an RBI single in the second inning, Harris added a run-scoring single to give Widener a 2-0 lead.
 
Wesley tied it in the third on a two-run double from Nicole Piscopo, but Widener grabbed a 4-2 cushion in the fourth.  Harris got another RBI single and junior Casey Hargadon (Wallingford, PA) contributed a run-scoring single.
 
The Wolverines (4-8) scored single runs in the fourth and fifth, but Shelby Mackintosh (Lumberton, NJ) broke the tie for Widener in the sixth with an RBI single to score fellow junior Jody Salvatore (Williamstown, NJ).
 
Korang (4-1) permitted four runs – three earned – over seven innings with two strikeouts for her fourth straight victory.  Hargadon and junior Jess Way (Marlton, NJ) had two hits apiece for the Pride (6-4).
 
Meghan McGonigle allowed five runs – two earned – and 11 hits over seven innings with four strikeouts for Wesley.  Jessica Barranco ended with three hits.
 
Widener in game two scored three times in the top of the first, starting with Harris crossing home on a wild pitch for a 1-0 cushion.  Hargadon later in the frame dropped a bunt single to score Way and an errant throw from third baseman Ashly Bendorovich plated Salvatore.
 
The Wolverines got two back in the bottom of the first on a two-run homer from Ashlyn Booth to make it 3-2.  But Widener scored four times in the fifth for a 7-2 contest on RBI singles from sophomore Valarie Perretti (Clayton, NJ) and Salvatore around run-scoring doubles by juniors Colleen Orsborn (Drexel Hill, PA) and Christine Mattis (Drexel Hill, PA).
 
Mattis (2-1) struck out five over six innings, allowing two runs and seven hits.  Salvatore ended with three hits.
 
Piscopo was tagged for seven runs – four earned – and nine hits over 4 1/3 innings.  She also had two hits in the contest.
 
Widener returns to action Sunday at Albright, beginning at 1:00 pm.
