Vanessa Hejnas’ Double-Double Helps Women’s Basketball Gain 78-55 Win Over Arcadia

Widener played strong in tonight's Commonwealth Conference match-up against Arcadia as it captured a 78-55 win at Schwartz Center.
 
Junior Vanessa Hejnas (Delran, NJ) was a force on both offense and defense for the Pride by leading the team with 14 rebounds, including nine on the offensive boards, and 10 points. It is Hejnas' first double-double of the season and she is the third player on the team to accomplish that this season. Hejnas also had four assists, two steals and two blocked shots.
 
Sophomore Joanna Persiano (Absecon, NJ) got the game started with a rebound followed by a shot in the paint good for two. The score remained close until the Pride (10-6, 3-2 CC) started to break away about halfway through the first half. Widener left the score 38-22 at the half. Sophomore Jennifer Egee (Ridley Park, PA) led the pack in the first half with 12 points, coming from a field goal, three 3-pointers and a free throw.

The second half started off with one of three steals by junior Kate Dellinger (Wrightsville, PA) with less than a minute gone from the clock. Egee and Persiano led the team with 12 points apiece. Ally Ferrucci (Vineland, NJ) totaled four assists, four steals and seven points with fellow freshman Courtney Colella (Cinnaminson, NJ) shooting 5-for-5 from the line.
 
Victoria Roukas led the scoring for the Knights (3-12, 0-5) with 21 points. Angie Adams added 12 points, five assists and two steals.
 
Widener takes part in a home Commonwealth Conference doubleheader with Lycoming this Saturday beginning at 1:00 pm. The men's game begins after at approximately 3:00 pm.
