Women's Basketball Falls, 58-48, at Messiah

(box score)

Widener played tough early against perennial power Messiah, but in the end was handed a 58-48 Commonwealth Conference loss in Grantham, PA.

Widener (9-6, 2-2 CC) only was down 20-16 with six minutes left in the first half before the home team took over.  Messiah scored 11 straight points, including a pair of 3-pointers from Nicky Hess for her only points of the contest and a 31-16 lead with under a minute to go in the half.

The Pride looked to make things interesting with 10:56 remaining when senior Lindsay Pepino (Oceanside, NY) hit two free throws to bring her squad within 39-30.  But Dori Gyori made 1-of-2 from the stripe 30 seconds later and Taylor Miller canned a huge 3-pointer following a turnover with nine minutes to play for a 43-30 contest.

Pepino closed with 15 points, one shy of her career best set November 24, 2010 at Neumann, and was perfect on her 11 free throws attempts.  Junior Kate Dellinger (Wrightsville, PA) poured in 13 points for the Pride, who only shot 33 percent (14-of-43) from the field.

Katelyn Vanderhoff scored 16 points, Gyori netted 13 and Miller added 11 for the Falcons (12-3, 3-1), who were limited to just 40 percent (17-of-43) shooting.  But Messiah gained an edge on the foul line, going 20-for-32 with Widener managing only 16-for-20.

Widener on Wednesday hosts Arcadia at 6:00 pm.
