Women's Basketball Handed 55-46 Setback at Elizabethtown

(box score)

Despite 15 points and 11 rebounds from junior Kate Dellinger (Wrightsville, PA), Widener picked the wrong time to go cold from the floor in a 55-46 Commonwealth Conference loss at Elizabethtown.

In a second half that was close most of the way, junior Vanessa Hejnas (Delran, NJ) made a layup with 7:35 remaining to bring Widener within 45-42.

Unfortunately, that would be the Pride's final basket as they surrendered a 10-4 run the rest of the way.  Jayci Scannapieco and Nadie Yunginger each scored four points apiece in that span for the Blue Jays (9-4, 2-1 CC).

Scannapieco began the spurt by hitting a jumper with 6:45 left for a 47-42 Blue Jays lead.  Widener sophomore Joanna Persiano (Absecon, NJ) canned two free throws 15 seconds later for a 47-44 deficit.

The teams then went quiet as over four minutes passed before another point was scored, which turned out to be the Blue Jays' Stephanie Ellwood hitting a jumper with 2:01 remaining for a 49-44 contest.  Scannapieco's jumper with 96 seconds to go made it 51-44.

Dellinger notched her fourth double-double of the season in addition to going 9-for-9 from the line.  Persiano scored nine points and junior Lil Carney (Narberth, PA) added seven for the Pride, who shot only 22 percent (14-of-65) from the floor.

Widener (9-5, 2-1) had its five-game winning streak against Elizabethtown, its longest in the series, snapped and fell for just the second time in its last nine games overall.

Ellwood poured in 12 points, Scannapieco added 10 and Taylor Kreider hauled in 12 rebounds for the Blue Jays, who won despite hitting only 39 percent (22-of-56) from the field and 4-of-11 from 3-point range.

Widener on Saturday visits Messiah for a 5:00 pm contest in Grantham, PA.
