Softball Gains a Split at Haverford

(Game 1) / (Game 2)

Widener jumped to a big lead in game one en route to an 8-6 victory at Haverford before suffering an 8-0 loss in the nightcap.

The Pride (14-12) in game one took a 2-1 lead in the third inning on a bunt single from Jess Way (Marlton, NJ) and a squeeze-bunt RBI from fellow sophomore Jen Nance (Lansdowne, PA). The margin ballooned to 4-1 in the fourth when senior Kelsey Shultz (Parker Ford, PA) clubbed a two-run homer for her first long ball of the season and fourth career.

Widener got four more in the fifth for an 8-1 cushion. Way dropped a suicide squeeze to score senior Meg Phillips (Aston, PA) before crossing home herself on a passed ball, Nance scored on a throwing error and sophomore Kristina Ostaszewski (Philadelphia, PA) ripped a run-scoring double.

Haverford (7-19) closed to 8-5 in the sixth keyed by a bases-loaded walk to Elizabeth Newman and a two-run single by Candice Smith. The Fords got another run in the seventh on a wild pitch, but Shultz got Newman on a pop out to end it.

Philadelphia, PA sophomore Liz Carpino (4-5) gave up five runs – two earned – and 10 hits over 5 1/3 innings for the win. Senior Astyn DiNorscia (Parkesburg, PA) had three of the Pride's 10 hits.

Lisa Karmel (4-7) allowed four runs and six hits over four innings and Jen DiCandilo rapped three hits for Haverford.

In game two, Haverford plated four runs in the fourth for a 7-0 lead. After a run scored on an error, Smith roped an RBI double, DiCandilo had a run-scoring single and Laura Iwanyk added an RBI single.

Maggie Cronin (1-4) permitted just three hits over four innings with two strikeouts for the Fords. Smith went 4-for-4 with two RBI, and both DiCandilo and Beth Davis had three hits apiece.

Delran, NJ freshman Jackie Korang (0-2) gave up seven runs – four earned – and nine hits over 3 1/3 innings for the Pride.

Widener on Friday hosts Messiah for a big Commonwealth Conference doubleheader that starts at 4:00 pm.
