Softball Makes it Four Straight Wins With Doubleheader Sweep of Wesley

(Game One) / (Game Two)

Senior Meg Phillips (Aston, PA) totaled four hits, including a home run in game one, lifting Widener to a 4-3 victory over Wesley before a 9-1 triumph in the nightcap in Chester, PA.

Wesley used back-to-back doubles in the top of the first to jump to a 1-0 lead in game one, but Widener cut down Ashlyn Booth at the plate on a 1-3-2 double play to limit the damage.

Phillips got the Pride offense going in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff double.  After advancing to third on a deep foul out, she scored to tie the game on a Wesley throwing error. Phillips gave Widener the lead in the third with a solo home run off the left field foul pole.

Widener added an insurance run in the fourth when sophomore Casey Hargadon (Wallingford, PA) drove a sacrifice fly to center to score senior Astyn DiNorscia (Parkesburg, PA), who led off the inning with a single.

Keeyana Talley evened the score at 3-3 in the sixth with a one-out, two-run double to left, after Wesley began the inning with back-to-back singles. But Widener was able to get another out at the plate when sophomore Colleen Orsborn (Drexel Hill, PA) threw out Talley for the second out, and freshman Jackie Korang (Delran, NJ) struck out Taylor Hendricks to end the threat.

After Wesley put the go-ahead run on with one out in the seventh, senior Kelsey Shultz (Parker Ford, PA) relieved Korang. A wild pitch put Wesley pinch runner Chloe Dawson in scoring position, and she advanced to third on a ground out. Carmen Walsh was then hit by a pitch, and stole second, but Shultz struck out Kelly Karle to get out of the jam.

Orsborn led off the Widener seventh with a single to center and advanced to third when Phillips' sacrifice bunt was thrown into right field.  That set the stage for a walk-off squeeze bunt from sophomore Jody Salvatore (Williamstown, NJ) for Widener's second walk-off victory in a week.

Shultz got the win, earning her fourth victory in as many appearances. Sophomore starting pitcher Christine Mattis (Drexel Hill, PA) allowed just one run over four innings.   Orsborn, who entered the game in the fourth, went 2-for-2.

Widener opened the second game with four straight hits, including a two-run double by sophomore Jen Nance (Lansdowne, PA), leading to a six-run outburst in the first.

Wesley got an unearned run back in the top of the second, but Widener added three more in the bottom, highlighted by back-to-back RBI doubles from Hargadon and DiNorscia.

Shultz (5-2) also got the win in game two, striking out four and allowing no earned runs over three innings. She also went 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored.  Freshman Nicole Guinto (Westville, NJ) struck out four, allowing no hits and just one walk over two scoreless innings.

Shannon Wright totaled three hits for the Wolverines (0-10).

Widener on Wednesday travels to Radnor, PA for a doubleheader against Cabrini at 3:00 pm.
