Women's Basketball Rolls to 80-52 Win Over Neumann

Widener used a great balance of offense and defense in cruising to an 80-52 victory over Neumann at Schwartz Center.
 
Widener (2-2) began to establish momentum thanks to a 16-2 run which gave it a 17-8 lead with 13 minutes left in the first half.  Junior Kate Dellinger (Wrightsville, PA), the reigning Commonwealth Conference Player of the Week, and sophomore Jennifer Egee (Ridley Park, PA) scored four points apiece in that spurt.
 
The Pride opened a 41-26 halftime lead by forcing 16 turnovers and limiting the Knights to just 32 percent shooting (7-of-22) from the field.
 
The second half belonged to junior Vanessa Hejnas (Delran, NJ), who scored six points during a 13-5 run that gave the Pride a 63-38 lead with 8:21 remaining.  Hejnas poured in 12 of her game-high 20 points in the second half and fell one point shy of her career best set last Tuesday against Swarthmore.
 
Dellinger notched 14 points, six rebounds and five steals, junior Francesca Lee (Hainesport, NJ) had 11 points and 11 rebounds for her fifth career double-double, and sophomore Joanna Persiano (Absecon, NJ) netted 10 points for the Pride.  Hejnas shot 9-of-14 from the floor overall to help the Pride hit 45 percent (18-of-40) in the second half and 42 percent (34-of-81) for the game.
 
Cecily Scavicchio scored 15 points and Sami Borcky netted eight for the Knights (1-3), who committed 32 turnovers and shot only 36 percent (15-of-42) from the field.
 
Widener on Monday visits King's for a 7:00 pm start in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
