Football Posts Most Lopsided Win in 70-0 Blanking of King's

(box score)

Junior Chris Haupt (Bloomsburg, PA) set a pair of career highs and Widener broke the school record for its most lopsided victory with a 70-0 Middle Atlantic Conference rout of King's at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.

The Pride (4-1, 2-1 MAC) also set the school record for most points scored in a college football game in the 18-year history of Quick Stadium.  They broke the mark for most decisive win set during a 61-0 triumph over Wilkes in 1998 and fell just shy of the top mark for most points set September 20, 2003, when they put up 74 at Lebanon Valley.

Haupt completed 24-of-40 passes for 346 yards, the 20th best mark in Widener history, and five touchdowns.  The yardage breaks his career high of 327 set last week at Wilkes.  The touchdown passes were one shy of the school record of six set by Mike Warker against Moravian on September 22, 2001.

Widener scored five touchdowns in the first half over a span of six drives to take a 35-0 halftime lead.  The Pride held a 322-77 advantage in total yards in that span, including 270-50.

Haupt's first touchdown pass came with 5:55 left in the first quarter, hitting sophomore Anthony Clayton (Cinnaminson, NJ) with a 20-yard pass for a 7-0 lead.  Haupt then found junior Steve Marrero (Reading, PA) on a 36-yard scoring strike with 2:48 to go in the period for a 14-0 margin.

Sophomore Adam Marcucci (Sicklerville, NJ) had a 13-yard scoring reception and senior Cedrick Clayton (Cinnaminson, NJ) added a 37-yard touchdown catch for a 28-0 margin.  Sophomore Tevin Campbell (Brookhaven, PA) ran one in from seven yards with 3:23 left in the first half for a 35-0 game.

Widener in the second half scored on five straight drives for the final.  Junior Carmen Imbalzano (Trenton, NJ) hauled in a 27-yard scoring pass and senior Brendan Curran (Sinking Spring, PA) ran one home from two yards, making it 49-0 at three quarter time.

Campbell added his second touchdown run, this time from 14 yards, and Curran had scoring bursts from one and three yards to cap things.

Senior Matt Breslin (Sugarloaf, PA) broke the school record with 10 extra points, topping the mark of eight set by John Ferko on October 29, 1977 against Ursinus.

Cedrick Clayton had five catches for a career-best 146 yards with Marcucci adding five catches for 77 yards.  Campbell rushed 17 times for a personal-high 113 yards to help Widener end with a 658-143 advantage in total offense, including 229-20 in rushing yards, and a 32-9 edge in first downs.

Sophomore Dylan Ditmer (Exton, PA) and sophomore Darius Johnson (Baltimore, MD) each had six tackles with senior Brad Waltman (Bel Air, MD) getting an interception.

Joe Kirchon completed 13-of-29 passes for 88 yards for the Monarchs (1-3, 1-2).  Ryan Cordingly amassed eight tackles, including seven solos.

Widener is home next Saturday against FDU-Florham, starting at 1:00 pm.
