Women’s Soccer Shuts out Wilkes, 1-0, at PPL Park

(box score)

Widener made the most of a unique night playing at PPL Park, notching its fifth straight victory with a 1-0 triumph over Wilkes in Chester, PA before over 1,000 fans.

Widener (6-1) wore down Wilkes in the second half and finally cracked the scoreboard in the 66th minute.  Junior Brittany Balentine (Medford, NJ) played a great long ball on the right to freshman Victoria Batter (Woodlyn, PA), who fired home a high shot from 12 yards for her third goal of the year.

The Pride dominated every facet in the second half, owning an 8-1 shots edge and forcing sophomore goalkeeper Vanessa Hejnas (Delran, NJ) to not have to make a save.

Balentine had four shots with Batter and senior Caryinna Yenchak (Ashley, PA) adding two apiece for Widener, which ended with an 11-5 edge.

Taryn Hallowell and Jenna Sargent had two shots each and Samantha Rohn made one save for the Lady Colonels (3-4).

The game served as a tremendous opportunity for Widener University, which entered a partnership as the official university of the Philadelphia Union, PPL Park and the Union's youth soccer partner partners, EPYSA and DYSA.  The multi-tiered partnership that includes signage, television and web advertising spots not only aims to promote the growth of youth soccer in Chester but also to increase awareness of Widener University and its undergraduate and graduate academic programs.

PPL Park features a picturesque view of the Commodore Barry Bridge as well as the Delaware River.  An average of over 17,000 fans have seen the Union, an expansion team this season in Major League Soccer, compete at the stadium this season.

Widener returns home Wednesday against Goucher, beginning at 7:00 pm at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.
