Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Against Eastern

(Game 1) / (Game 2) / (Strike Out Cancer Night)

Senior Kim Dougherty (Belle Mead, NJ) hit a home run in each game to help Widener defeat Eastern 5-3 in the opener and 9-3 in the nightcap in Chester, PA.

 

Widener jumped to a 5-0 lead in the first inning of game one.  Senior Caitlin Callahan (Franklin Square, NY) singled with one out and stole second.  Dougherty followed with a two-run homer to left.  Junior Kelsey Shultz (Parker Ford, PA) doubled to score senior Steph Connolly (Aston, PA), who reached on an error.  A passed ball scored senior Lauren Brubaker (Newtown Square, PA), who singled, and junior Astyn DiNorscia (Parkesburg, PA) singled home Shultz.

 

Freshman Liz Carpino (Philadelphia, PA) pitched six innings for the win to improve to 4-0.  Dougherty recorded her second save of the year.

 

After yielding a run to Eastern in the top of the first, Widener took another first inning lead in game two, once again via a two-run longball to left by Dougherty.

 

The Pride (15-7) scored five times in the bottom of the second.  Senior Jamie Schmucker (Holmes, PA) led off with her first of two doubles in the game.  Freshman Shelby Mackintosh (Lumberton, NJ) drove a one-out single to right.  After junior Meg Phillips (Aston, PA) reached on an error, Callahan singled to score two.  Dougherty followed with a sacrifice fly and Connolly delivered a two-run homer to left.

 

Widener added two insurance runs in the bottom of the third with a two-run homer by Mackintosh.

 

Junior Emily Donnelly (Cheltenham, PA) went four innings to improve to 2-0.  Shultz pitched the last three innings for her first save of the year, striking out four and allowing just one hit, one walk, and one run.

 

Jaclyn Gangemi had four hits on the day for the Eagles (8-15).  Samantha Terenzoni had two hits and drove in two runs in game one, and Theresa Esposito had two hits and scored two runs in game two.


The game was part of the team's annual "Strike Out Cancer Night."  Raffles and bake sales were held with all proceeds benefiting the HEADstrong Foundation.

The victory in game one was the 450th triumph for Widener coach Fred Dohrmann.  In his 29th year, the winningest active coach for the Pride in any sport is 451-389 for his career.
 

Widener on Thursday hosts DeSales for a doubleheader, beginning at 4 pm.
