Seniors Caitlin Callahan (Franklin Square, NY) and Kim Dougherty (Belle Mead, NJ) delivered clutch RBI in the third inning of game two to give Widener a 4-2 Commonwealth Conference win over No. 5 Messiah following a 5-0 loss in Grantham, PA.
With game two tied at one in the top of the third, junior Meg Phillips (Aston, PA) lined a leadoff double and took third on a wild pitch. She scored on Callahan' sacrifice fly to center and Dougherty followed with her second home run of the season for a 3-1 margin.
The Pride made it 4-1 in the fourth. Senior Lauren Brubaker (Newtown Square, PA) notched a lead off single, reached second when junior Astyn DiNorscia (Parkersburg, PA) was safe on an error and both advanced on a sacrifice from senior Jamie Schmucker (Holmes, PA). Phillips fouled out to left for a sacrifice fly, scoring Brubaker.
Parker Ford, PA junior Kelsey Shultz (6-3) made it stand, yielding just two runs and nine hits over seven innings with five strikeouts. Callahan had two RBI with Phillips and senior Steph Connolly (Aston, PA) each recording two hits for Widener (13-7, 2-4 CC).
Jocelyn Hickey (2-2) gave up four runs – two earned – and six hits over 3 1/3 innings for the Falcons (18-5, 5-1). Abby Bergakker ended with three hits.
Messiah, the defending NCAA champion, in game one scored four times in the third to open the scoring. Bergakker, Jessica Rhoads and Stephanie Schell all had RBI singles in the frame.
It was enough for Rhoads (12-1), who struck out 12 over seven innings and permitted just three hits and two walks. Bergakker, Schell and Ashley Lehman each had two hits.
Dougherty (3-4) was charged with four runs and seven hits over four innings.
Widener on Wednesday hosts Eastern on “Strike Out Cancer Night,” beginning at 5:00 pm. Raffles and bake sales will be held with proceeds benefiting the HEADstrong Foundation.
