Senior Steph Connolly (Aston, PA) extended her hitting streak to a career-high 10 games, finishing with two hits in Widener's 5-1 Commonwealth Conference victory over Elizabethtown in the opener, before going 3-for-3 in a 4-2 win in the nightcap in Chester, PA.
Elizabethtown took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning in game one on an RBI single by Paige Tanner.
Widener came back with two in the second. Connolly led off with a single, and junior Kelsey Shultz (Parker Ford, PA) followed with a double. After two consecutive outs, senior Jamie Schmucker (Holmes, PA) got a clutch two-run single to give Widener the lead.
The Pride added three more in the third on an RBI double by Connolly and a two-run single by junior Astyn DiNorscia (Parkesburg, PA).
Connolly and Shultz scored two runs each, and DiNorscia had two hits.
Senior Kim Dougherty (Belle Mead, NJ) improved to 9-5 with the win, allowing just four hits and one run over seven innings.
Shultz, Widener's starting pitcher in game two, helped herself with an RBI single in the bottom of the third for a 1-0 lead. The Pride made it 2-0 in the fourth on an RBI single by senior Caitlin Callahan (Franklin Square, NY).
After Elizabethtown rallied to tie the score in the top of the fifth on RBI singles by Whitney Breneman and Tanner, Widener regained the lead with two unearned runs in the bottom.
Elizabethtown threatened again in the top of the seventh. After a leadoff strikeout, the next two batters singled. A ground out to third put the tying runs in scoring position, but Shultz (8-7) got Elly McCarthy to foul out to end the game.
Shultz and DiNorscia finished with two hits each for the Pride (24-13, 6-6 CC).
Breneman went 3-for-3 for the Blue Jays (17-10-1, 6-6).
Widener is in a three-way tie with Alvernia and Elizabethtown for third place in the conference. It can clinch a conference tournament berth with two wins Thursday, when it visits Albright for a 3:00 pm doubleheader.
