Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Cabrini

(Game 1) / (Game 2)

Freshman Liz Carpino (Philadelphia, PA) pitched a complete game for a 5-1 Widener victory over Cabrini before a heartbreaking 5-4 loss in the nightcap in Chester, PA.

After falling behind 1-0 in the top of the second in game one, Widener tied it in the bottom on a home run by junior Kelsey Shultz (Parker Ford, PA).  It was her second long ball in as many games.

Widener tallied again in the third on an unearned run to take a 2-1 lead.  Freshman Shelby Mackintosh (Lumberton, NJ) added an RBI double in the fourth and senior Lauren Brubaker (Newtown Sq., PA) drove in two with a double in the fifth.

Brubaker finished with two doubles and a run scored, Mackintosh had two hits and senior Caitlin Callahan (Franklin Square, NY) also notched two hits.

Carpino improved to 5-0 with the win.

Cabrini took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game two on an unearned run.  Widener countered with two in the bottom of the second to take the lead.  Senior Steph Connolly (Aston, PA) led off with a double and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Brubaker.  Senior Jamie Schmucker (Holmes, PA) reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a wild pitch.

Cabrini took the lead back in the top of the third on a two-run homer by Angela Shookster.

Widener regained the lead in the bottom of the frame on a two-run single by Connolly, and took a 4-3 lead to the top of the seventh.  The Pride (19-9) could not hold the lead, however.  Cabrini began the inning with back-to-back doubles by Ryan McDonough and Shookster to tie the score.  After a wild pitch, Cheri Johns drove in pinch runner Melissa Miller with a single up the middle for the go-ahead run and Liz Zimmer retired the Pride in order in the bottom of the inning.

Connolly and junior Meg Phillips (Aston, PA) finished with two hits each.

Shookster closed 3-for-3 with a double, a home run and four RBI for the Cavaliers (13-11).  Liz Zimmer went the distance to improve to 6-5 on the season.

Widener on Thursday hosts Haverford for a doubleheader, beginning at 4 pm.
