Junior Kelsey Shultz (Parker Ford, PA) hit her first career home run and pitched seven solid innings to help Widener defeat Lycoming 5-1 in game two, following a 5-3 victory in the opener of Commonwealth Conference play in Chester, PA.
Senior Caitlin Callahan (Franklin Square, NY) scored to give Widener a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one. She then doubled in the third to plate junior Meg Phillips (Aston, PA). Senior Steph Connolly (Aston, PA) hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to make it 3-0.
Lycoming staged a comeback in the top of the sixth, plating three runs to tie the score that included a two-run homer from Janelle Poorman.
Widener answered in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Kim Dougherty (Belle Mead, NJ) scored from second on a fielder's choice when Lycoming shortstop Manda Peck made a diving stop up the middle to get the out at second. Senior Jamie Schmucker (Holmes, PA) supplied an insurance run with a single to right.
Dougherty (5-4) struck out eight over seven innings for the win.
The Pride (18-8, 4-4 CC) took a 2-0 lead in the third inning of game two when Shultz drove a two-run long ball to right center. Widener scored three more in the fifth on RBI hits by Connolly, Shultz and senior Lauren Brubaker (Newtown Square, PA).
Shultz (7-4) shut Lycoming out for the first six innings, and shut down a seventh-inning rally to preserve the victory.
Callahan, Dougherty, Shultz and Brubaker all had two hits each.
Holly Lansberry had two hits for the Lady Warriors (8-18, 2-6) in game two.
Widener on Monday hosts Cabrini for a doubleheader, beginning at 4 pm.
