Softball Splits Twin-Bill at Arcadia

Steph Connolly (Aston, PA) drove home four runs in the opener and fellow senior Kim Dougherty (Belle Mead, NJ) pitched great for Widener in a 6-3 Commonwealth Conference win at Arcadia that preceded an 8-0 loss in Glenside, PA.

 

Widener (12-6, 1-3 CC) in game one plated two runs in the top of the first inning.  Dougherty had an RBI double that scored senior Caitlin Callahan (Franklin Square, NY) and Connolly followed with a run-scoring double.

 

Callahan in the third inning crossed home on an error and Arcadia's Lindsey Henchinski had an RBI double in the bottom of the frame for a 3-1 margin.  Connolly ripped a two-run double in the top of the fifth for a 5-1 game.

 

Dougherty (3-3) permitted three runs – two earned – and four hits over seven innings with five strikeouts.  Callahan went 4-for-4 with four runs and Connolly added two hits.

 

Kellie Reese allowed six runs – four earned – and 10 hits over seven innings for the Knights (8-11, 2-4).

 

Arcadia in game two got things rolling in the first on a three-run homer from Kristen Burns.  The home team got three more runs in the second for a 6-0 lead, ignited by Henchinski's RBI double.

 

Parker Ford, PA junior Kelsey Shultz (5-3) gave up eight runs – seven earned – and six hits over four innings for Widener.  Dougherty had two hits.

 

Kelsey Roberts yielded four hits over five innings with two strikeouts.  Burns ended with two hits and three RBI.

 

Widener on Monday visits reigning NCAA champion and No. 5 Messiah, beginning at 2:30 pm in Grantham, PA.
