Game 1 / Game 2
Widener took the lead in the second inning of both contests, but could not generate enough offense to hold off Alvernia and was dealt a 5-1 loss in the opener, and a 5-2 defeat in the nightcap.
Senior Steph Connolly (Aston, PA) walked and scored in the second inning to give Widener a 1-0 lead in game one. That was all the offense the Pride could muster, however. Alvernia tied the score in the top of the third on a double by Rhiannon Sorrentino, who went 4-for-4 in the game. The Knights scored four runs on three errors in the top of the sixth, and held on for the win. Deanna Dungee (4-3) recorded the win allowing just three hits over seven innings.
Widener (11-5, 0-2) again took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of game two when senior Lauren Brubaker (Newtown Square, PA) roped a double to score Connolly, who went 3-for-3 in the game. Alvernia countered with four in the top of the third, including a two-run homer by Samantha Geisinger. Brubaker singled home Connolly again in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 4-2, but Michelle Jensen (4-3) shut the Pride down from there.
Sorrentino finished with six hits on the day for the Knights (8-6, 2-2), and Geisinger had five.
Widener on Monday travels to Grantham, PA for a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader against Messiah, beginning at 2:30 pm.
