Widener's run of bad luck in close games continued as it dropped a tough 76-74 Commonwealth Conference match-up at Lycoming in Williamsport, PA.
Down 68-60 with 4:17 remaining, Widener (13-12, 6-8 CC) went on a 7-0 run in under a minute to close to 68-67. Sophomore Perry Wright (Severn, MD) ended the run on a 3-pointer.
Ihsaan Davis drilled a 3-pointer with 1:39 left and Jerald Williams hit 1-of-2 from the line with 1:10 to play, giving Lycoming a 72-67 lead. Sophomore Onyi Ezeala (Piscataway, NJ) kept the Pride in it, making two free throws with 1:03 remaining for a 72-69 contest.
Mike Bradley drilled two 3-pointers with 24 seconds left to give the Warriors a 74-69 margin and seemingly end the game. But nobody told sophomore BJ Smith (Baltimore, MD), who canned a triple with 19 seconds remaining for a two-point contest.
Will Kelly committed a turnover for Lycoming and it was just the break Widener needed. Ezeala made the home team pay by hitting a layup with 13 seconds to go for a 74-74 game.
But Lycoming (20-5, 10-4) found a way as Eric Anthony hit a fadeaway shot in the lane with 5.3 seconds left for the final points. Widener looked to tie, but senior Bobby Edmunds (Linwood, NJ) had his two-point jumper bounce off the rim at the buzzer.
Wright scored 17 points off the bench with sophomore Jack Brennan (Stratford, NJ) notching 16 and 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double this season. Ezeala scored 12 points, Edmunds and Smith had 11 apiece and junior Jarrell Nelson (Waldorf, MD) hauled in eight rebounds.
Anthony finished with 20 points, Davis scored 17, Kelly poured in 11 and Bradley netted 10 for the Warriors.
Despite shooting 57 percent (16-of-28) from the field in the second half and hitting nine 3-pointers overall, Widener fell to 5-6 in games decided by fewer than eight points or in overtime.
