Junior Colleen Cormier (Westampton, NJ) scored just under nine minutes into overtime, lifting Widener to a 2-1 victory over Delaware Valley at Edith R. Dixon Field.
Junior Kate Fay (West Chester, PA) sent a ball across the circle in overtime to Cormier, who buried it for the game-winner at the 78:43 mark.
Widener dominated play for nearly the entire first half, outshooting Delaware Valley 11-1 and earning an 8-0 edge in penalty corners in the period but could not manage to find the back of the cage.
Freshman Samantha Balonis (Northumberland, PA) got Widener on the board just over ten minutes into the second half following an assist from Fay. The Pride (6-2) frantically fought to score an insurance goal against goalkeeper Hollis Hancock, who made five saves in the second half and 12 for the game.
Delaware Valley broke through to tie the score, 1-1, with just over six minutes left in regulation. Katy Provenzale assisted Mindy Miniconzi, whose shot was deflected in off a Widener defender.
Cormier took eight shots for Widener, which outshot Delaware Valley 24-9 and finished with a 16-3 advantage in penalty corners. Megan Scarpinato (Sewell, NJ) finished with six shots and fellow senior Megan Purcell (Perkasie, PA) made one save for the win.
Rony Jacober closed with five shots and Sara Culver made two defensive saves for the Aggies (7-5).
The game was part of “Stick it to Cancer Night.” Widener collected donations to raise money for the National Foundation for Cancer Research. Players wore different colors to signify various forms of cancer.
Widener on Friday travels to Reading, PA for a Commonwealth Conference matchup with Albright beginning at 3:00 pm.
