Softball Splits Doubleheader With Swarthmore

(Game 1) / (Game 2)

Senior Rachel O'Leary (Coatesville, PA) homered and junior Kim Dougherty (Belle Mead, NJ) pitched solidly in game one, when Widener notched a 7-2 victory over Swarthmore preceding a 3-0 loss.

Widener (10-8) in game one plated five runs in the second inning for a 6-1 lead, keyed by O'Leary's solo blast for her fourth career home run. Sophomore Meg Phillips (Aston, PA), junior Caitlin Callahan (Franklin Square, NY) and senior Stephanie Caulford (Vineland, NJ) had RBI singles in the frame.

Dougherty (4-4) posted her fourth victory in five decisions, yielding two runs – one earned – and nine hits over seven innings with four strikeouts. She closed with two hits and Callahan had two RBI.

Alexandra Zelaski (3-5) allowed six runs – three earned – and seven hits over two innings for the Garnet (9-8).

Swarthmore in game two rode the coattails of Kathryn Riley (5-3), who yielded two singles for Widener's only baserunners. She struck out six over seven innings for her fourth shutout of the year.

The Garnet opened the scoring in the fourth with two runs as Krista Scheirer had an RBI groundout and Markey Spector lined a run-scoring single. Elizabeth Cushing laced an RBI double to left-center field in the seventh for Swarthmore, which closed the game with 11 hits.

Manville, NJ native Christine Bradley (0-2) was charged with three runs and 11 hits over seven innings for the Pride.
