Softball Sweeps Twin-Bill From Elizabethtown in Conference Opener

Meg Phillips (Aston, PA) drove home the winning run in the 10th inning of game one, a 6-5 victory, and fellow sophomore Kelsey Shultz (Parker Ford, PA) tossed her first shutout in the nightcap in a 5-0 Commonwealth Conference triumph over Elizabethtown in Chester, PA.
 
Elizabethtown (3-9, 0-2 CC) in the top of the 10th had Autumn Phillips placed on second base as per international rules. She was sacrificed to third by Shannon Marsico and scored on a double to left field by Marian Guzik for a 5-4 lead.
 
But the Pride (6-6, 2-0 CC) rallied for two runs in the last of the frame. Junior Christine Bradley (Manville, NJ) was placed on a second and reach third on a sacrifice by junior Jamie Schumucker (Holmes, PA). She scored on a single through the left side by junior Lauren Brubaker (Newtown Square, PA) and Phillips followed with an RBI double to left.
 
Widener grabbed a 4-2 lead in the sixth when senior Krista Cesarine (Ridley Park, PA) blasted a two-run homer to center. But Elizabethtown responded in the seventh when Julie Sebastian cranked a two-run long ball tie it.
 
Belle Mead, NJ junior Kim Dougherty (2-3) matched her career high with eight strikeouts, allowing five runs – four earned – and 11 hits over 10 innings. Brubaker ended with three of Widener's eight hits.
 
Sebastian (1-5) was charged with six runs – four earned – and eight hits over 9 1/3 innings for the Blue Jays. Guzik closed with three hits.
 
Widener in game two scored twice in the first inning. Junior Steph Connolly (Aston, PA) lined an RBI single and senior Rachel O'Leary (Coatesville, PA) had a run-scoring single to left.
 
Shultz (4-2) notched her third straight win, permitting six hits over seven innings with four strikeouts. Connolly ended with three hits.
 
Elaine Parr (2-4) was saddled with five runs – three earned – and 10 hits over six innings for Elizabethtown.
 
Widener on Wednesday returns home against Chestnut Hill for a 5:00 pm doubleheader.
