Women's Basketball Holds Off Elizabethtown for 57-43 Victory

(boxscore)

Senior Beth Dessart Mager (Newtown Square, PA) and freshman Casey Pritz (Abington, PA) had 14 points and 10 rebounds apiece for Widener in a 57-43 Commonwealth Conference win over Elizabethtown at Schwartz Center.

In a game much closer than the final, neither team held more than a five point lead a majority of the second half. That changed with 3:07 left when Dessart Mager hit a layup to give Widener a 48-41 cushion.

Megan Quinn (Millersville, PA) made two free throws with 2:56 remaining to bring the Blue Jays within 48-43. But that would be the visitors' final points of the contest as the Pride nailed 7-of-8 from the line in the last 2:20. Senior Barbara Fleming (Philadelphia, PA) shot 3-for-4 during that run.

Pritz notched her ninth double-double of the season and Dessart Mager posted her first for the Pride (14-7, 5-3 CC), who held the Blue Jays without a basket the last 5:30. Fleming scored 11 points and junior Rayne Reber (Pottstown, PA) had 10 and eight rebounds off the bench.

Megan Romano scored 14 points, Stephanie Ellwood had nine and 10 rebounds with Jenn Montague grabbing 11 rebounds for Elizabethtown, which shot 17 percent (5-of-30) in the first half and 21 percent (13-of-62) overall.

Widener is one game in front of idle Albright (4-4) for third place in the conference. The teams meet Wednesday in Reading, PA at 6:00 pm, preceding the men's contest at 8:00 pm.
