Francesca Lee (Hainesport, NJ) was the catalyst in the decisive run and fellow freshman Lil Carney (Narbeth, PA) scored 10 of her 15 points in the second half for Widener, which got it done on both ends of the court in the second half for a 69-60 win at St. Mary's (MD).
Lee netted five points during a 17-6 run to being the second half, giving Widener a 52-42 lead with 14:04 left. Lee, Carney and senior Lindsey Isler (New Hope, PA) each nailed a 3-pointer in that span.
The Seahawks (0-3) moved to 60-57 with 5:33 remaining on Megan Seeman's 3-pointer, but it would be the squad's penultimate basket. Carney drilled two free throws with 3:30 to play for a 62-57 cushion and sophomore Casey Pritz (Abington, PA) made a layup with 1:29 left for a seven-point game.
Widener (3-1) shot a blistering 52 percent (12-of-23) from the field in the second half and held St. Mary's to a paltry 21 percent (7-of-33). The Pride hit 46 percent (24-of-52) with seven 3-pointers and the Seahawks converted only 36 percent (21-of-59).
Lee netted 15 points with three 3-pointers, Pritz scored 10 points, Rayne Reber (Pottstown, PA) netted eight and fellow senior Becky Tyler (Wynnewood, PA) hauled in eight rebounds for Widener.
Steph Saint-Aubin poured in 21 points with 15 rebounds, including 11 offensive boards, and was 9-for-14 from the line for St. Mary's (MD). Pui Sham contributed 10 points.
