Sophomore Casey Pritz (Abington, PA) scored six of her team-high 12 points during the decisive run for Widener, which opened the flood gates in the first half for a 68-56 triumph at Rutgers-Camden in Camden, NJ.
Pritz' outburst came during an 11-0 spurt that gave the Pride a 25-13 lead with 4:58 left in the first half. She ended the half with eight points for Widener (2-0), which grabbed a 34-22 cushion by holding RU-Camden (0-1) to just 21 percent (4-of-19) shooting from the field.
The Pride's defense limited the Scarlet Raptors without a basket for a seven-minute spurt in each half. RU-Camden finished hitting a mere 29 percent (13-of-45) from the floor.
Senior Becky Tyler (Wynnewood, PA) had 11 points and seven rebounds with freshman Lil Carney (Narbeth, PA) netting 10 points for the Pride.
Brittany Turner poured in 12 points and Samantha Bragg scored 10 for RU-Camden.
In an unusual parade of free throws, Widener shot 27-for-38 and RU-Camden hit 28-for-36. Tyler connected on 9-for-10 and Bragg was 8-for-10.
Widener on Saturday plays Roanoke at the Seahawk Tip-Off Tournament in St. Mary's City, MD, beginning at 3:00 pm.
