Softball Splits Doubleheader at Wesley

4/9/08 -- Widener split a doubleheader at Wesley, cruising to an 11-2 victory before a 3-2 loss in Dover, DE.

The Pride (19-9) broke open game one with a four-run first inning. Freshman Meg Phillips (Aston, PA) lined an RBI single and sophomore Lauren Brubaker (Newtown Square, PA) added a two-run single.

Phillips added an RBI triple later in the contest, closing with two hits.

Parker Ford, PA freshman Kelsey Shultz (4-2) got the victory, yielding just two unearned runs over three innings with two strikeouts.

Megan Street (1-8) allowed 11 runs -- five earned -- and nine hits over five innings for the Wolverines (4-20). 

Wesley in game two took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third, courtesy of Marie Elzey's two-run single. Kelly Caton in the first had an RBI triple.

Lansdowne, PA senior Mallory Meyer (8-5) gave up three runs -- two earned -- and seven hits over six innings with five strikeouts for the Pride. Krista Cesarine (Ridley Park, PA) had an RBI groundout in the third and fellow junior Rachel O'Leary (Coatesville, PA) lined an RBI triple.

Elzey (1-8) surrendered two runs and eight hits over six innings with four strikeouts.

Widener is home Saturday for a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader against Albright, beginning at 1:00 pm.
