Softball Rolls to Doubleheader Sweep, 10-0 and 4-0, of Eastern

(Game 1) / (Game 2)

4/3/08 -- Senior Mallory Meyer (Lansdowne, PA) homered and notched her seventh straight victory for Widener, 10-0 and 4-0 winners over Eastern.

Meyer led off the bottom of the first with her fifth home run of the season, part of a four-run frame. Krista Cesarine (Ridley Park, PA) lined an RBI single and fellow sophomore Stephanie Caulford (Vineland, NJ) rapped a two-run homer.

The Pride (17-7) scored four more in the fourth for the final margin, highlighted by a two-run double from junior Rachel O'Leary (Coatesville, PA).

Meyer (8-3) cruised from there, permitting just three hits over five innings with three strikeouts. Meyer, Cesarine and sophomore Caitlin Callahan (Franklin Square, NY) each had two hits.

Rachel Weis (4-5) was charged with 10 runs – nine earned – and 11 hits over four innings for the Eagles (9-13).

Widener in game two scored three times in the first inning. Cesarine executed a perfect sacrifice bunt that scored Meyer and sophomore Steph Connolly (Aston, PA) had an RBI single.

Belle Mead, NJ sophomore Kim Dougherty (6-2) allowed just two hits over four scoreless innings with three strikeouts and no walks. Freshman Kelsey Shultz (Parker Ford, PA) surrendered only two hits over three scoreless innings for his first collegiate save.

Meyer ran her hitting streak to nine games. Cesarine had a hit in the first game but was blanked in the second, stopping her streak at 11 contests.

Kristine Rosko (3-2) was charged with four runs – two earned – and seven hits over six innings with four strikeouts for Eastern.

The contests were part of Widener initiative to “Strike Out Cancer.” The Pride wore special pink t-shirts to mark the occasion, sold the same t-shirts and held a bake sale. All proceeds went to the American Cancer Society.

The victories moved improved 27th-year coach Fred Dohrmann's career record to 399-359. He already is the program's winningest coach and the school's winningest active coach.

Widener on Saturday hosts Lebanon Valley in a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader, beginning at 1:00 pm.
