Softball Breaks Single-Season School Record For Most Wins in Doubleheader Sweep at Elizabethtown

4/19/08 -- Senior Mallory Meyer (Lansdowne, PA) pitched solidly and sophomore Kim Dougherty (Belle Mead, NJ) won her seventh straight decision in the circle to help Widener sweep a Commonwealth Conference doubleheader, 2-1 and 12-5, at Elizabethtown.

Widener in game one grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Meyer singled, took second on a sacrifice from sophomore Caitlin Callahan (Franklin Square, NY), reached third on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout from junior Krista Cesarine (Ridley Park, PA).

Elizabethtown (11-16, 5-3 CC) tied it in the second on Paige Tanner's RBI double.

The Pride opened a 2-1 lead in the fourth. Junior Stephanie Caulford (Vineland, NJ) walked and was pinch-run for by sophomore Jamie Schmucker (Holmes, PA). She took second on a wild pitch and scored on a two-out double from sophomore Steph Connolly (Aston, PA).

Meyer (10-6) reached double figures in wins for the third straight year, permitting just one run and two hits over seven innings with three strikeouts.

Alex Lee gave up two runs and two hits over five innings for the Blue Jays.

The Pride in the second inning of game two plated seven runs for a 7-3 lead, highlighted by Callahan's two-run double. Caulford, Meyer and Dougherty also had RBI in the frame.

Dougherty had an RBI single in the fifth to give Widener an 8-5 lead. The margin grew to 12-5 in the seventh as Meyer and Cesarine each notched RBI singles and Caulford lined a two-run single up the middle.

Dougherty (10-2) permitted five runs and nine hits over seven innings with three strikeouts. She and Callahan each had three hits in the contest.

Lee also pitched the nightcap, yielding 12 runs – nine earned – and 16 hits over seven innings. Tanner collected three hits for Elizabethtown, which committed five errors.

The Pride (26-10, 7-1) established a new school record for most victories in a season, breaking the previous mark set in 1995 (25-9).

Widener hits the road Wednesday to face Neumann, beginning at 4:00 pm in Aston, PA.
