3/26/08 -- Widener split a doubleheader against Haverford, dropping a 6-3 contest in the opener before a 4-3 triumph in the nightcap.
Haverford (6-4) in game one scored three times in the top of the first inning. Cassandra Searls helped herself with an RBI single and Allison Frank ripped a two-run double.
The Fords plated three more in the fifth for a 6-1 margin. Lindsey Sullivan had an RBI single and Alison Crawford added a two-run single.
Searls (1-0) gave up one run and four hits over four innings with two strikeouts. Lisa Karmel permitted two runs – one earned – and four hits over three innings for the save.
Parker Ford, PA freshman
Kelsey Shultz (3-2) allowed six runs and eight hits over 4 1/3 innings for the Pride (11-7).
Sophomore
Lauren Brubaker (Newtown Square, PA) in the second inning of game two looped a two-out, two-run single that gave Widener a 2-1 lead. The margin grew to 3-1 in the fourth when sophomore
Caitlin Callahan (Franklin Square, NY) crossed home on a wild pitch.
The Pride then benefited on a bizarre play in the top of the fifth inning. Crawford launched an apparent two-run homer that would have tied the score, 3-3. But on-deck hitter Dana Irshay touched home plate before Crawford, negating the home run. Crawford was credited with a triple and an RBI, but was ruled out and thus closed the gap to 3-2.
Widener plated one in the fifth for a 4-2 game when senior
Mallory Meyer (Lansdowne, PA) scored on a throwing error by pitcher Samantha Fontinell. Haverford got the run back in the seventh on Crawford's RBI single, but Sullivan struck out swinging to end it.
Meyer (5-3) pitched solidly for her fourth straight win, yielding three runs – two earned – and four hits over seven innings with four strikeouts. Junior
Krista Cesarine (Ridley Park, PA) had a hit in each game, extending her hitting streak to six games.
Becky Garabito (1-1) permitted two runs and three hits over three innings for the Fords.
Widener on Saturday opens Commonwealth Conference play at Lycoming, beginning at 1:00 pm in Williamsport, PA.
