Senior Beth Dessart Mager (Newtown Square, PA) nailed the go-ahead 3-pointer with 43 seconds left for Widener in an enthralling 57-54 victory over King's at Schwartz Center.
Kristen Baumes (Hughestown, PA) drilled a 3-pointer to give King's a 52-50 lead with 4:12 left. Junior Becky Tyler (Wynnewood, PA) brought the Pride (2-3) even on a layup with 2:47 remaining.
After a series of misses, the Lady Monarchs (1-3) got the ball back and Kaitlyn Malshefski canned a jumper just inside the 3-point arc for a 54-52 cushion with 1:00 to play.
Widener quickly brought it down and Dessart Mager was on the spot, burying her decisive shot for a 55-54 lead. King's looked for the lead, but Malshefski lost the ball to Dessart Mager and her fast-break pass to junior Lindsey Isler (New Hope, PA) led to a layup with 16 seconds to play for a 57-54 margin.
The Lady Monarchs went for the tie, but Baumes' 3-pointer was blocked by senior Barbara Fleming (Philadelphia, PA) in the waning seconds.
Dessart Mager poured in 18 points in 33 minutes with Tyler closed with 11 points and nine rebounds. Fleming scored nine points and freshman Casey Pritz (Abington, PA) had eight and rebounds for Widener, which shot 41 percent (12-of-29) in the second half.
Kaitlyn Fiorino scored 19 points with Brittany Muscatell adding 10 and 10 rebounds for the Lady Monarchs.
Widener on Friday visits Salisbury at 6:00 pm.
