Men's Basketball Captures Oki Data Americas Tip-Off With a Pair of Victories; Matt Sosna Named Tournament MVP

11/16-17/07 – Junior Matt Sosna (Stratford, NJ) was named tournament Most Valuable Player as Widener opened its season by capturing the Oki Data Americas Tip-Off at Schwartz Center.

Widener (2-0) in the first round Friday notched a 67-64 victory over Williamson Trade before Saturday's 72-62 win over Catholic in the final.

Sosna on Friday notched his first career double-double with 13 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. He shot 5-of-10 from the floor over 30 minutes in helping Widener hit 45 percent (13-of-29) in the first half.

Freshman Clinton Cole (Upper Darby, PA) scored 10 points in his collegiate debut and sophomore Jamarr Johnson (Pittsgrove, NJ) grabbed seven rebounds for the Pride.

Widener gained a huge edge on the foul line, hitting 19-for-30 compared to 6-for-9 for Williamson. The home team also posted a 46-27 rebounding advantage.

Sosna again on Saturday played a key role with a career-high 14 points, converting 5-of-7 from the floor over 28 minutes. Sophomore Bobby Edmunds (Linwood, NJ) and junior Charles Jones (Philadelphia, PA) each poured in 15 points, helping the Pride hit for 48 percent (25-of-52) from the field.

Sosna grabbed six rebounds with Johnson and Edmunds notching five apiece.

Jones was named to the all-tournament team, ending the weekend with 24 points. Also making the team were Jason Banzhaf and Sean Stolzenthaler from Catholic, Jose Soto from Williamson and Jason Seipt from Delaware Valley.

Catholic notched a 64-60 victory in Friday's second semifinal and Williamson posted a 57-44 win in Saturday's consolation game.

Widener on Friday plays Gwynedd-Mercy at 6:00 pm at the Gallaudet Holiday Tournament in Washington, DC.
