10/6/07 -- Widener scored 14 unanswered points in the second half and won its second straight game with a 21-17 Middle Atlantic Conference victory over King's at Leslie C. Quick Jr. Stadium.
With Widener down 17-7 late in the third quarter, senior Orlando Brown (Wilmington, DE) came up big with the first of his two interceptions. His 30-yard return off a pass from Jeff Searfass to the King's 16 yard line put Widener in striking distance. Five plays later, senior quarterback Matt Campbell (Broomall, PA) snuck it in from one yard with 1:16 left for a 17-14 deficit.
The Monarchs' next possession lasted just three plays as Brown picked off backup John Cuiffo at the Pride 42 yard line. The six-play, 58-yard drive ended when sophomore Andre Payton (Folsom, PA) found the end zone on an 11-yard sweep with 12:37 left for a 21-17 lead.
The teams traded a turnover and a punt before the Monarchs (0-5, 0-2 MAC) got the ball back on their 20-yard line. That drive ended when sophomore Brian Pastor (Chambersburg, PA) intercepted Cuiffo, but the Pride (3-2, 2-0) gave it right back with Campbell's fumble on the next play at the Monarchs 32 yard line with 3:40 to play.
Cuiffo threw four incomplete passes to give Widener the ball. The Pride gave the pigskin to sophomore running back Ian Decker (Phillipsburg, NJ), who had six carries for 26 yards on the final drive to help the home team run out the clock.
Campbell completed 12-of-24 passes for 175 yards and one touchdown with senior Mike Falkenstein (Newark, DE) adding six catches for 95 yards. Junior Steve Cook (Drexel Hill, PA) had 14 carries for 45 yards and senior Dan MacDonald (Pine Hill, NJ) amassed 11 tackles.
Searfass completed 13-of-21 passes for 160 yards and two scores with Rick Ritter totaling five catches for 55 yards. Tore Alaimo ended with 12 tackles and Matt Little added nine.
King's opened the scoring when Bob Cirko hauled in a 32-yard scoring pass from Searfass just 4:58 into the game for a 7-0 lead. But Widener scored on its opening possession for the fourth time this season as Cook ran it in from 21 yards for a 7-7 tie.
Tim Lust booted a 21-yard field goal late in the opening quarter and Cirko caught a 31-yard touchdown pass from Searfass with 1:04 remaining in the half for a 17-7 Monarchs lead.
Widener returns home next Saturday against Lebanon Valley at 1:00 pm.
