Steve Carcarey is in his eighth season as Widener’s baseball coach.
Carcarey has made his mark with the squad, amassing a 161-109-2 record during his time. That includes back-to-back 26-win seasons in 2007 and 2008 and six straight appearances in the Commonwealth Conference Tournament.
It was his sixth appearance that was the most memorable as Widener won its first conference title of any kind since taking the Middle Atlantic Conference in 1999. The Pride, who notched a school-record 27 wins, also were regular-season champs for the first time since winning the MAC Southern Division in 1978.
Widener won two games in the NCAA Tournament, marking the first time this had happened since 1982.
Carcarey notched a milestone March 18, 2008 in Widener’s 7-6, 12-inning triumph over Gwynedd-Mercy for his 100th career win. Under Carcarey’s leadership, Widener owns a 148-88-2 record over the last six years.
Carcarey also is a member of the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA).
Prior to joining Widener’s staff in 2003, Carcarey was the head coach at Kennedy-Kenrick High School in Norristown for five seasons. His teams advanced to the Philadelphia Catholic League playoffs four times in that span and competed in the 2001 title game.
Carcarey has had 16 of his high school players extend their baseball careers at the collegiate level. Chris Lubanski was the most prominent, taken fifth overall by the Kansas City Royals in the 2002 Major League Baseball draft. Lubanski also was named the Gatorade National Player of the Year.
Prior to Carcarey’s head coaching responsibilities at Kennedy-Kenrick, he was the head coach of the junior varsity programs at Norristown Area High School (1993-98) and Bishop Kenrick (1990-93). Carcarey graduated from Bishop Kenrick in 1988 and from Montgomery County Community College in 1991.
Carcarey resides in Trappe, PA with his wife Patrizia, daughter Skye, 19, and son Steven, 5.
