Pride Battle Haverford in Season Opener

CHESTER, Pa. - Widener Women's Volleyball battled Haverford in its season and home opener on Tuesday night, ultimately falling to the Fords, 3-0.

The Pride moves to 0-1 on the season.

BY THE NUMBERS HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Widener opened the season by taking an early 1-0 lead before Haverford responded with a 10-3 advantage. The Pride began chipping away at the deficit behind kills from Kayla Sicher, Kramer, Chronister and Zimmerman. Widener then put together a strong run, turning a 16-12 deficit into an 18-16 lead. The Pride continued to battle and reached set point at 24-23, but Haverford answered with three straight points to take the opening frame, 26-24.
  • The Pride came out strong again, jumping ahead 2-0 before Haverford took a 4-2 lead. Widener responded with four straight points to regain the advantage at 6-4. The teams continued to trade points throughout the frame, eventually reaching a 15-15 tie. Haverford later built a 21-17 lead, but Widener refused to go away. Chronister delivered back-to-back service aces to help bring the Pride within one at 23-22, before Kramer tied the set at 24-24 with another ace. Widener continued to fight through extra points, taking a 29-28 lead, but Haverford scored the final three points to claim the set, 31-29.
  • Widener again grabbed an early lead, going up 3-2 before the Fords answered. The Pride stayed within striking distance, tying the set at 5-5 and later using a service ace from Rachel Towers and a Haverford attack error to even the score at 9-9. Haverford began to pull away midway through the frame, taking a 15-10 lead, but Widener responded to cut the deficit to 19-16. The Fords maintained their advantage down the stretch, closing out the set, 25-19, to complete the sweep.

The Pride heads to Camden, N.J., on Thursday, September 3, to take on Rutgers-Camden. Match time is set for 7:00 p.m.
