ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – Widener Baseball finishes off their regular season with a split against the Eastern Eagles.
The Pride finish the regular season with a 20-18 overall record and a 13-8 record in MAC Commonwealth play.
BY THE NUMBERS GAME ONE
- Hayden O'Neill was brilliant on the mound, tossing a 7.0 inning complete game, allowing just one earned run on five hits while striking out three batters to secure the victory.
- Kevin Bukowski powered the offense, going 1-for-3 with a two-run home run, a walk, and two runs scored.
- Myles Calderbank went 1-3 at the plate with a clutch two run single.
BY THE NUMBERS GAME TWO
- Brandon Yoder led the offense by going 2-for-4 at the plate, scoring two runs, driving in one RBI, and stealing two bases.
- Tyler Harper delivered a solid multi-hit performance, going 2-for-4 with an RBI single.
- Ryan Madden consistently found his way on base, finishing the game 2-for-3 with a walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME ONE
- Widener jumped out to an immediate lead in the top of the first inning. After Brandon Yoder reached based on a fielder's choice, Kevin Bukowski stepped to the plate and blasted a two-run home run to center field, giving the Pride a quick 2-0 advantage. The Pride completely broke the game open with a massive four-run surge in the third inning. Ryan Madden ignited the rally with a lead off double down the third-base line, and Yoder followed shortly after with a single to right field. After Bukowski drew a walk to load the bases, Brendan Raven reached on a fielder's choice that caused a throwing error by the opposing pitcher, allowing Madden to score. Sean Burke kept the line moving by drawing a bases-loaded walk to bring Yoder home. Myles Calderbank then delivered the biggest hit of the inning, ripping a two-run single to center field that scored Raven and Bukowski, extending the Widener lead to a commanding 6-0.
- The Eagles finally managed to break up the shutout in the bottom of the fifth inning. A pair of singles combined with a wild pitch allowed one run to cross the plate, cutting Widener's lead to 6-1. From there, O'Neill completely shut the door. He induced a fly out and back-to-back ground outs for a clean 1-2-3 inning in the sixth. In the bottom of the seventh, Eastern threatened with a pair of one-out singles, but O'Neill got out of the jam to finish the complete game and give Widener a 6-1 win.
HOW IT HAPPENED GAME TWO
- Widener struck first in the top of the first inning. Braedyn Clinton was hit by a pitch to open the game, immediately stole second, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Brandon Yoder then put the Pride on the board by reaching on an RBI fielder's choice that allowed Clinton to score. Moments later, Yoder stole second and third and came home on a throwing error by the catcher to give Widener a quick 2-0 lead. Eastern answered right back in the bottom of the first with a lead off solo home run to cut the deficit to 2-1. After a scoreless second inning, Widener extended their lead in the top of the third. Sean Burke ripped a double to right-center and advanced to third on a single by Yoder. Mark Selverian then hit into a fielder's choice that brought Burke across the plate, pushing the Widener lead to 3-1. Both teams were held scoreless through the fourth inning.
- The Pride continued to build momentum in the top of the fifth. Yoder and Selverian hit back-to-back singles, setting the stage for Tyler Harper, who lined an RBI single to right-center to bring Yoder home for a 4-1 Widener advantage. However, Eastern slowly began to chip away at the lead. In the bottom of the fifth, the Eagles managed to score a run on an RBI single to make it 4-2. Eastern continued their rally in the bottom of the sixth, adding on another run with an RBI single, narrowing the Widener lead to 4-3. The bottom of the seventh proved to be the turning point. Eastern delivered two RBI singles to push two runs across the plate, taking their first lead of the game at 5-4. The Pride would be unable to get their bats going again and would lose game two by a final score of 5-4.
