Pride Battles No. 6 Stevens, Ramapo in Home Tri-Match

CHESTER, Pa. - Widener hosts a tri-match, dropping the opener to No. 6 Stevens before battling Ramapo in a five-set contest that ultimately went to the Roadrunners. 

The Pride drops to 6-16 on the season and 0-4 in conference 

BY THE NUMBERS - STEVENS 

  • Jason Dunn directed the offense with 19 assists while adding five digs and one service ace. 

  • Jarrett Edwards anchored the defense with a team-high nine digs while also recording two assists. 

HOW IT HAPPENED - STEVENS 

  • Widener opened the match with a kill from Wannamaker off a set by Dunn to take an early 1–0 lead. The Pride kept the set close early as Wannamaker added another kill to tie the score at 2–2, and Marquis followed with a kill to make it 5–3. After Stevens built a larger advantage, Widener responded with points from Wannamaker and Anioma Njokanma to cut the deficit to 14–9. Njokanma added another kill and Marquis later contributed a point to keep the Pride within reach at 20–11. Widener continued to fight late with kills from Josh Akinwale and Marquis, but Stevens closed out the set to take the opener 25–15. 

  • The Pride opened the second set with early momentum as Wannamaker recorded a kill off a set from Dunn to give the Pride a 1–0 lead, and Marquis followed with a kill to make it 2–1. Dahl added a pair of kills to keep Widener within reach at 5–4, and another point from Dahl later made it 7–5. Stevens responded with a run to extend the lead, but Dahl continued to produce offensively with another kill to bring the score to 12–6. Widener later added points on errors and a late service error by Stevens to reach 24–11, but the Ducks secured the final point to take the set 25–11. 

  • Widener opened the third set by taking the first point on a Stevens error before trading points early with the Ducks. Njokanma gave the Pride a 3–2 advantage with a kill off a set from Dunn. After Stevens built a small lead, Matthew Randall and Akinwale each recorded kills to keep Widener within reach at 10–6. Wannamaker followed with a kill and Dunn added a service ace to narrow the gap to 11–8. The Pride continued to respond with points from Randall and Akinwale to make it 16–11 and later 17–13. Widener added another point on a Stevens service error to reach 19–15, but the Ducks closed the match with a late run to take the set 25–15. 

BY THE NUMBERS – RAMAPO 

  • Matthew Randall led Widener with 10 kills while adding six blocks in a strong all-around performance. 

  • Quinby Dahl recorded nine kills, six blocks, and nine digs for the Pride. 

  • Jason Dunn finished with 22 assists and nine digs. 

  • Kevin Tinio anchored the defense with a team-high 11 digs and added one assist. 

HOW IT HAPPENED – RAMAPO 

  • The Pride opened the first set trading points early, as Randall and Anioma Njokanma helped Widener stay within striking distance at 3–3. Randall delivered a kill and the Roadrunners had an error to give Widener a 5–4 lead. Back-to-back kills from Dahl and Kevin Stubbs helped to push the Pride ahead 8–6. Njokanma and Randall added another key block, while Stubbs notched a service ace to take advantage to 15–14, but Ramapo battled back with a kill to tie the set at 15–15. Widener responded with kills from Josh Akinwale and Dahl to go up 20–18. Njokanma and Randall connected for a final block, giving Widener a 25–20 win in the opening set. 

  • Ramapo opened the second set with a quick exchange of points, as Widener stayed close with early kills from Stubbs and Njokanma to keep the score tied at 2–2. Randall and Dahl added key kills to give the Pride a narrow 6–5 lead, and Sandberg's service ace extended it to 7–5. The Roadrunners battled back to tie the set at 8–8. Widener regained a small edge at 12–10 with aces and kills from Marquis, Dunn, and Randall, but Ramapo went on a run to capture momentum, taking points to go up 18–14. Despite efforts from Widener, including a service ace from Sandberg, the Roadrunners maintained control and closed out the set 25–20. 

  • Widener bounced back in the third set, coming back from an early 6-0 deficit. A kill from Randall put the Pride back in reach 7-5. Dahl, Akinwale, and Wannamaker added additional kills to put the Pride back in front 12-11. Back-to-back kills from Wannamaker extended their lead 16-13. A back-and-forth battle with the Roadrunners ultimately ended with the Pride narrowly coming out on top 25-23.. 

  • Ramapo pulled out a tight fourth set, with early points trading back and forth as Widener scored off a kill from Dahl and an ace from Njokanma to take a brief 4–3 lead. The Roadrunners responded with a series of kills and Widener errors to go up 9–7, and both teams battled through a stretch of service aces and attack errors, keeping the set tied at 15–15. Key points allowed Ramapo to edge ahead, and despite Widener rallies from Wannamaker and costly Roadrunners errors, Ramapo secured the final points to win the set 25–23. 

  • The decisive fifth set saw both teams exchanging early points, with Widener responding with a kill from Wannamaker to tie it at 1–1. The Roadrunners then went on a brief run with kills to take a 4–1 lead, but Widener battled back with Randall and Dahl converting points to narrow it to 5–4. The teams traded points through the middle of the set, with service errors and attack errors keeping the score tight at 11–9. Ramapo then gained the edge with consecutive kills from, while key errors from Widener at critical moments allowed the Roadrunners to pull away, ultimately taking the set 15–10 and clinching the match.

The Pride travel to Frederick, Md., on Wednesday, March 18, to take on Hood College. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
