Men’s Lacrosse Fall to Western New England in Sunny Florida

ST. LEO'S, Fla. – A quick trip to Florida for a neutral site Widener Men's Lacrosse game bows to Western New England.
 
The 20-9 loss moves the Pride to 2-4 in the regular season.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Luke Shimko led the Pride with a hat trick and three assists.
  • Matthew Marino and Samuel Haverstrom each saw two goals.
  • Tyler Eahart led the Pride on defense with four caused turnovers.
  • In the cage, Logan Mast would see six saves.
  • The Pride took 30 shots on offense, see 10 saves, go 18-of-25 in clears, and win seven faceoffs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A fast-paced game opened with a quick Golden Bears goal but the Pride struck back quick with a Haverstrom goal from Sean Alminde with 12:35 left. Shimko and Alminde would let shots fly before the Golden Bears put in another. Colyn Schmitz would see a few saves before Marino found the back of the cage with 3:16 left. The period ended with the Pride down 6-2.
     
  • Mast would take over to start the second as the Golden Bears would continue to pressure the Pride defense. Liam Reilly would force a turnover to give Shimko a shot on goal. The Golden Bears offense would pin the Pride to make the score 13-2 with 2:36 to play. A Matthew Shingle faceoff win gave Shimko a ground ball and quick goal to stop the scoring drought. The half ended with the Pride down 13-3.
     
  • Marino picked up a goal right out of half off a Shimko pass to make the score 13-4. The Golden Bears offense found their groove again to score a quick three goals before Eahart forced a turnover to give Shimko an unassisted goal with 3:26 left. Mast accumulated saves to end the third down 17-5.
     
  • With 15 minutes to play, JD Gippe took over in the cage while Nicholas Knepp and Haverstrom saw shots. Gippe snagged two quick saves with just over eight to play. Eahart's back-to-back forced turnovers would give the Pride an attacking opportunity before the Golden Bears scored another. Rowen Coverdale won the preceeding faceoff to give Alminde an unassisted goal for his fourth with 4:00 left. The scoring would come late with goals from Shimko and Haverstrom picking up another for their stat lines. With 0:32 left, Ashton Amend picked up his third for the season while the game ended with the final scoring 20-9 in favor of Western New England.

Widener returns to Hirschmann Field at Quick Stadium on Saturday, March 14 for a 1 p.m. faceoff against the 6-0 (0-0 NJAC) Montclair State Red Hawks.
