Haverstrom and Shimko Score Five in First Men’s Lacrosse Win

SHENANDOAH, Va. – Samuel Haverstrom and Luke Shimko led Widener men's lacrosse in a trip to Virginia. 
 
The 17-10 win moves the Pride to 1-1 in the regular season.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Samuel Haverstrom and Luke Shimko score five goals to lead the Pride on offense.
  • Shimko would hold three assists.
  • Aiden Jackson led the defense with three caused turnovers.
  • First year Logan Mast controlled the cage with a dozen saves.
  • The Pride out shot the Hornets 39-33, went a perfect 15-of-15 in clears, and snagged 36 ground balls.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pride opened the 60-minute contest with a Shimko goal after a Shimko caused turnover. A Hornets turnover would give Haverstrom a goal to take the lead with 10:18 left in the period. Shimko forced the ball out while the Pride capitalized with a Liam Drake goal. Mast picked up some saves in the final four minutes while Matthew Marino found the back of the cage to end the first up 4-3.
     
  • The Pride momentum continued to roll with a Knepp man-down goal to open the second. Double Mast saves and a good clear gave Haverstrom his second goal of the game off a Shimko ball. Jackson poke the ball out before Haverstrom's shot would be saved. The Hornets answered the Pride but Shimko answered back to make the score 7-4. The Pride would see a man-up goal from Luke Cichetti with 6:09 left in the second. The half ended with the Blue and Gold up 8-4.
     
  • Out of half, Mast picked up a save to give Jacob Shannon a ground ball and a good clear. An unassisted Haverstrom goal gave the Pride a 9-5 lead with 10:35 left. Jackson's caused turnover again gave the Pride a good clear and a Shimko goal minutes later. Shingle won the faceoff following a Hornets goal to give Haverstrom his fourth. Haverstrom found another unassisted goal to cap his day to send the Pride into the final 15 up 12-7.
     
  • The offense continued to pester the Hornets with shots from Matt Horgan and Cichetti before Shimko's connected. Another goal saw the net from Horgan to double the Hornet score. Mast's save at 7:57 gave the Pride offense a good transition and a Jacob Shannon unassisted goal. Three from the Hornets cut the score down to force a Pride timeout. Out of the timeout, Shimko found Horgan for the 16th goal of the game. Two penalties gave Shimko the final goal on a man-up opportunity from Marino. Mast save one last save to end the game with a 17-10 final.
UP NEXT
Widener heads home to Chester, Pa. for their home opener on Wednesday, February 28 against the 1-0 (0-0 Centennial) Washington Shoremen. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
