Men's Lacrosse Falls to Swarthmore in Season Opener

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Widener men's lacrosse opens their season at nearby Swarthmore in a chilly afternoon.
 
The 18-5 loss opens the Pride's season with a 0-1 record.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Luke Shimko led the Pride with a pair of goals and four ground balls.
  • Aiden Jackson would hold a caused turnover and three ground balls.
  • Logan Mast would accumulate 17 saves in the cage.
  • The Pride took 24 shots (16 on target), go 10-of-23 in clears, and win eight faceoffs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first quarter would open slow for the Pride as shots would fall wide from Shimko and Sean Alminde before Shimko connected. With 5:44 left in the first, Matthew Shingle won a faceoff to give Shimko a go ahead goal with 5:04. Shingle won the proceeding faceoff while Alminde tied the game at two with 3:37 left in the first. 
     
  • Another slow start for the Pride came in the second with the Garnet defense powering the field. A Pride timeout would give the team some rest before Alminde ripped one wide. Shimko connected with net six seconds later to cut into the 6-3 deficit. Mast made saves before the Garnet went on a 3-0 run at the end the second.
     
  • With 30 left to play, Jackson won the faceoff on a violation. Eli Warfel saw his first shot of the season alongside Liam Drake. Mast would pick up a handful of saves before the fast-paced Garnet offense took a 6-0 run to end the third up 15-3.
     
  • Horgan opened the fourth with a ground ball and a goal with 12:43. Shingle won the next faceoff on a violation before Sam Haverstrom, Alminde, and Warfel let shots fly. Liam Drake found the back of the cage with 1:36 left to end the game with a final of 18-3. 
UP NEXT
Widener returns to the field on Saturday, February 21 for a 1 p.m. trip to Winchester, Va. to take on the 0-1 (0-0 ODAC) Shenandoah Hornets.
