Pride Hold Off Eastern in Conference Win

ST. DAVID'S, Pa. – Widener Women's basketball pulled out a close conference win against the Eastern Eagles on Wednesday.

The Pride are now 10-4 on the season.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • Lindsay Kutz posted a strong all-around performance with 12 points and 10 rebounds, recording a double-double.
  • Riley Stackhouse was tied for the lead in scoring, finishing with 12 points on 6-for-8 shooting from the free-throw line.
  • Liliana Metrick delivered a solid game with 12 points, including a three-pointer.
  • Giada Palmieri was a force on the glass, collecting 10 rebounds to go along with 9 points, helping Widener control the paint.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Widener opened the game with an early 8-0 lead after buckets from Riley Stackhouse, Jayla Daniels, and Lindsay Kutz. Palmieri connect on a layup with under 30 seconds followed up by a Stackhouse free throw to give Widener a 17-15 lead after one.

The Pride maintained control in a tightly contested second period, with early layups from Palmieri, Kutz, and Stackhouse. While Widener had control, Eastern kept themselves within striking distance for the entirety of the quarter. The Pride would head into the halftime locker room with a slim 32-29 lead.

Widener delivered one of its best stretches of the night in the third quarter. Casiello and Daniels led off the quarter strong, giving the Pride an eight-point lead. A three ball from Metrick and a layup from Casiello would give Widener their largest lead of the night at 13 points. The Pride were able to hold the Eagles to just 9 points in the quarter and would take a 49-38 into the final frame.

Eastern made a late push by scoring 25 points in the final period, bringing the score within three late in the game. Giada Palmieri hit a clutch layup with 16 seconds remaining to put Widener up six and that is all they needed and would walk out of St. David's, Pa. with a 67-63 win.

The Pride will stay on the road as they travel Frederick, Md. to face Hood on Saturday, January 17th. Tip off is set for 1:00 p.m.
