Late Goal Pushes Widener to 1-1 Draw at Wilkes

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Widener Women's soccer scored a late goal to earn a hard-fought draw against the Wilkes University Colonels

The Pride are now 4-3-1 on the season and 0-0 in conference play.

  • The Pride had 16 shots (5 on goal). The Colonels had 9 shots (4 on goal).
  • Avery Drumbore scored the only goal of the night for Widener.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Widener started strong, as Charlotte Burke struck the post less than a minute in and forced an early save minutes later. The Pride outshot Wilkes 6–2 in the opening period but found themselves behind after Wilkes' broke through with a goal in the 39th minute. Despite controlling much of the half and shot attempts from Abby Picollo and Giovanna Chaves, Widener trailed 1–0 at the break.
  • Wilkes opened the half with pressure, but goalkeeper Araba Abanyie came up big with three crucial saves, including back-to-back stops in the 50th minute and the 52nd minute. Burke continued to pepper the goal with attempts, testing both Wilkes keepers after substitutions. In the closing minutes, Widener's persistence paid off—following a Wilkes yellow card, Avery Drumbore came through in the 88th minute, pulling the Pride level at 1–1. The Pride nearly grabbed a late winner as Picollo fired high in the 89th minute, but the match ended in a hard-fought draw.

The Pride will return to Elizabeth J. Hirschmann Field on Saturday, September 27th for a match against Lebanon Valley. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
