Late Goals Sink Widener in 3-1 Loss to Washington College

CHESTER, Pa. - Widener Field Hockey falls 3-1 to Washington College despite strong third-quarter push. 

The Pride drop to 2-2 on the season and remain 0-0 in conference play.  

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Pride recorded six penalty corners, five of which were in the third quarter. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Pride's defense stood tall in the opening 15 minutes, as Fithian made an early save and the Pride blocked multiple shots to keep the Shorewomen scoreless. On the attack, Alex Quartapella and Cenci forced back-to-back saves, while Karly Bervinchak added a blocked attempt late in the quarter. Despite two penalty corners for the Shorewomen, the Pride held strong to send the game into the second tied 0–0. 

  • Washington College kept pressure on early, but Krista Bervinchak came up with a clutch defensive save to deny a penalty-corner shot. Fithian stayed sharp in net, adding three more stops in the frame to keep the Pride within reach. Despite multiple blocked chances by the Pride defense, the Shorewomen finally broke through to take a 1–0 lead heading into halftime. 

  • The Pride came out strong after halftime, generating back-to-back penalty corners before Cenci buried the equalizer to make it 1–1. Widener kept the momentum rolling with multiple corner opportunities, as Kayleigh Armstrong and Cenci both put up shots. The quarter closed with the Pride outshooting the Shorewomen and controlling possession, setting up a tight final stretch. 

  • In the final quarter, Fithian continued to anchor the Pride's defense with several strong saves, but the Shorewomen's attack eventually broke through. The Shorewomen pulled ahead with two goals in the quarter, creating a gap the Pride couldn't close. The Pride earned a late penalty corner and kept pressing in the closing moments, but the comeback effort fell short in a 3–1 final.

Widener returns home, to Chester, Pa., on Saturday, September 13, when they host Drew University. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
