Late Goal Hands Women’s Soccer First Loss of the Season

CHESTER, Pa. - Widener Women's Soccer played a hard-fought match against the Washington College Shorewomen but ultimately came up short.

The Pride are now 0-1-0 on the season and 0-0 in conference play.

BY THE NUMBERS
  • The Pride had 8 shots (1 on goal). The Shorewomen had 13 shots (4 on goal).
  • First year goalkeeper Araba Abanyie had three saves in her debut
  • The Pride attempted 2 corner kicks while Washington College attempted 4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first half saw both sides play lockdown defense, making the offense work hard just to get the ball near the net. The Pride were able to get off five shots in the first half but were unable to find the back of the net. First year goalkeeper Araba Abanyie would pick up her first career save at the 44:06 mark. The game would go into the half all tied up at zero.
  • The defenses continued to dominate in the second half, but Washington College began to pick up some momentum. The Shorewomen would out shoot the Pride 10 to 3 in the second half and eventually broke through to take the lead on their last shot of the game at the 86:23 mark. With such little time remaining, Widener was unable to tie the game back up and would suffer a 1-0 loss in game one of the 2025 season.

The Pride will stay at home to face the Transylvania University Pioneers on Sunday, August 31st. Kick off is set for 1:00 PM.
