Deja Vu? Maits Aids in First Win Over Gwynedd Mercy on Rainy Night

Maits puts up near career high stats

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – Third quarter secures a Widener Men's Lacrosse win in a rainy scene to match one year ago over Gwynedd Mercy.
 
The 13-6 win moves the Pride to 1-4 in the regular season.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Leading the way was Bryant Maits who scored five goals and forced two turnovers.
  • Liam Drake would see a career high four goals.
  • In the cage, Keegan Billie would make 10 saves.
  • The Pride would outshoot the Griffins 48 to 30 and snag one more ground ball.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pride would open the game with two quick goals against but would turn on the scoring switch at 6:47 in the first with a Maits goal. Matthew Shingle snagged a faceoff win before the Griffins would force a turnover and rattle shots. Billie would keep the attacking Griffins from adding to their lead and Drake put up his first goal of the game with 2:03 remaining. The Pride would head into the second down 3-2.
  • Cole Blum opened the second with a faceoff win to set up the Pride in the attacking zone. Maits would see his second goal with a Samuel Haverstrom assist. A minute later, Drake saw his second to take a 4-3 lead. A quiet portion of the quarter would be broken with a Maits forced turnover on a clear attempt and a Jacob Shannon ground ball which led into Maits' hat trick. Haverstrom would end the half with one of his own as the Pride would see their first lead at half in the season. The score was 6-3.
  • The Pride continued to dominate the faceoff as Blum won another right out of half. Matthew Marino would find the back of the cage within the first minute of play. A Griffins goal at 9:24 would break the Pride scoring run but the Pride would quickly answer 30 seconds later with Matt Buckley finding net. Drake went on to put up a hat trick with a CJ Lane assist with 7:00 remaining. A quick turnaround would show Maits and Marino adding to the stat lines. Drake and Maits ended the quarter with another goal apiece to make the score 13-4 in favor of the Blue and Gold.
  • The offense slowed in the final 15 minutes of play as Billie would take over with saves left and right. The Pride would take shots to keep the pressure high. As time ticked under-five the Pride would run out the clock to see their first win of the season with a final score of 13-6 on the road.

Widener will recover and return to Chester, Pa. on Wednesday, Mar. 12 for a 1 p.m. matchup against the 1-3 (0-0 CNE) Western New England Golden Bears.
