Third Quarter Fatigue Results in Tough Loss to Western New England

CHESTER, Pa. – Widener Men's Lacrosse fall on Spring Break to Western New England as the third quarter fatigue set in.
 
The 13-6 loss moves the Pride to 1-5 in the season.
 
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Samuel Haverstrom would lead the Pride with two goals on offense.
  • On defense, Aidan Jackson saw two caused turnovers.
  • Keegan Billie registered eight saves.
  • The Pride would take 27 shots, snag 16 ground balls, and win 11 faceoffs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first quarter would feature one Pride goal after 12 minutes of play. George Kniaz would get the shooting game started with a quick one right out of the gate. Back-to-back penalties at 9:37 and 8:30 would put the Pride on the defensive. A good penalty kill would aid in Matt Buckley's first goal of the game at 3:54. The quarter ended 1-0 in favor of the Pride.
  • Within the first couple minutes, Buckley and Matthew Marino would take shots to pressure the Golden Bears. Matt Horgan would find the back of the cage to take the lead at 9:53 on an unassisted goal. Turnovers became a stat line in the final five minutes of play but Billie would register saves to keep the score tied 2-2 at half.
  • Out of halftime, the Pride struggled on both sides of the ball. Billie would register a couple saves to limit the damage and a 5:52 goal from Haverstrom after a CJ Lane pass made the score 8-3 in favor of the Golden Bears. The quarter ended with the Pride down 10-3.
  • The battle was on in the final 15 minutes of play. Haverstrom registered his second goal of the game at 13:04. At 6:41, Matt Ellison found the back of the cage to make the score 12-5 Golden Bears as Robert Watkins dished the ball in. Luke Shimko's 2:34 goal was too little too late as the Pride would fall 13-6 to Western New England.
UP NEXT
Widener will hit the road to Elizabethtown, Pa. for a 7 p.m. showdown against the 2-3 (1-0 Landmark) Elizabethtown Blue Jays. Faceoff is scheduled for Wednesday, Mar. 19.
