Battle in the Trenches Comes Out Empty Against Montclair State

MONTCLAIR, N.J.Matthew Shingle controls the faceoffs with eight in a close Widener Men's Lacrosse defeat to Montclair State.

The 8-6 loss moves the Pride to 1-8 in the regular season with conference play a week out.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Five would see a caused turnover on the defensive side.
  • In the cage, Keegan Billie would mark a near season high 15 goals.
  • The Pride took 31 shots on offense (20 on goal), lead with 15-14 saves, go 25-of-29 in clears, and win 10 faceoffs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Pride opened with a quick Matthew Shingle faceoff win. Luke Shimko and Nick Knepp saw shots that wouldn't fall. The Pride offense would keep the pressure on for the majority of the quarter as Buckley, Bryant Maits, and Shimko kept pestering shots at the Red Hawks goalkeeper. Billie registered a few saves as Chris Covington put the Pride on the board with 2:57 remaining in the first. The Pride would end the quarter down 3-1.
  • Cole Blum saw a faceoff win to start the second quarter. Billie would go on a tear with saves to keep the attacking Red Hawks silent. Billie's goalkeeping abilities shined as a Samuel Haverstrom caused turnover would give Billie a ground ball and Buckley a man-down goal to make the score 3-2 with 6:53 remaining. Again, shots would be sent flying from the Pride as Shimko and Luke Cichetti put two in the air. The Pride would go into half down 4-2.
  • Out of the gate, Shingle won another faceoff and Billie made another save to allow a good clear and a Shimko goal just three minutes into the quarter. The Pride defense quickly found themselves down three quick goals but Marino found the back of the cage to put a cork in the Red Hawks offense with a goal from Mike Kala'I. Haverstrom would see a blocked shot and a hit post before Maits scored a man-up goal at 1:58. The score was 8-5 with 15 minutes to play.
  • Shingle snagged another faceoff win to get the final 15 minutes started. The Pride and Red Hawks clashed for a good majority of the quarter as both would take shots and make saves, forcing a stalemate. With 2:43 remaining in the game, Buckley found the back of the cage to end the stalemate and make the score 8-6. Time would expire for the Pride as they fell 8-6 at the end of 60 minutes.
