CHESTER, Pa. – Widener Men's Lacrosse open hot against Shenandoah at Quick Stadium as
Samuel Haverstrom would highlight scoring.
The 9-8 loss moves the Pride to 0-2 in the regular season.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Samuel Haverstrom led the Pride with two goals on five shots while dishing three assists.
- In the cage, Keegan Billie registered 13 saves.
- The Pride would force 11 turnovers and would go near perfect 21-of-22 on clear attempts
HOW IT HAPPENED
- A busy opening five minutes for the Pride offense would be highlighted by Bryant Maits, Matt Buckley, and Haverstrom shots. Standing strong in the cage was Billie who registered two saves before Haverstrom found net with a goal to score first. Three shots later, Mike Kala'I saw a goal from Haverstrom to take 2-0 lead at 7:08. A Shenandoah clear would allow their first goal to be score that would cap off the first with a 2-1 Widener lead.
- Cole Blum won a faceoff to open the second that quickly allowed Haverstrom to pick up his second of the game off a Nick Knepp pass. Billie kept the attacking Hornets out of the cage with another save to allow a Chris Covington ground ball to a Luke Shimko goal to take a 4-1 lead at 9:13. The Pride offense erupted with another goal at 5:55 from Buckley. A quick goal from Shimko forced a Shenandoah timeout with 5:24 remaining before half. The score was 6-1. Matt Horgan would cap off a 4-0 Pride favored scoring run to head into half up 7-1.
- Out of halftime, the Pride offense would settle allowing Billie and the defense to bow but not break. Billie would register three saves in a quick span as the offense would see shots from Shimko and Horgan that wouldn't fall. The only Pride goal would be seen at the :57 mark with a Billie save and Buckley goal off a Knepp pass. The Pride would head into the final 15 with an 8-5 lead.
- A tough fourth quarter would favor the Hornets. Sean Alminde would see his first shot of the game to put some pressure on the Hornets' goalie. Maits and Horgan continued to rattle shots that would be saved. A frustrated Pride offense would see two penalties with just under five remaining with a tied game at 8. Widener would call a timeout to draw a plan but would come up short with a final score of 9-8.
