Men's Volleyball Pick Up Their Fifth Straight Win in Challenging Sweep

CHESTER, Pa. - Men's Volleyball pick up their fifth straight win with a huge sweep over the Cougars of Kean University. 

The Pride improve to 11-4 on the season and remain 0-0 in conference play. 

BY THE NUMBERS 

  • Josh Matchett had an outstanding all-around game, recording 8 kills with a .571 hitting percentage, along with 30 assists and 10 digs. 

  • Matthew Christ led Widener in kills with 10, hitting .429, while also contributing 11 digs, 3 total blocks, and 2 service aces. 

  • Michael Martino was a key offensive force, leading the team with 12 kills and a .333 hitting percentage. 

  • Stephen Marquis was a strong presence at the net with 7 kills and 3 total blocks while also recording a service ace. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Widener opened the match with a strong start, taking an early lead behind kills from Michael Martino and Matthew Christ. Kean fought back, tying the set multiple times, but Josh Matchett orchestrated the offense efficiently, setting up key kills and adding a service ace. Late in the set, Widener used a crucial block from Josh Akinwale and Christian Wannamaker to gain momentum. A final push, highlighted by a kill from Stephen Marquis, helped secure the opening set, 25-23. 

  • Kean came out stronger in the second set, keeping the score close through the early stages. However, Widener responded with a critical mid-set surge, fueled by a series of kills from Christ, Martino, and Marquis. Matchett continued to distribute the ball effectively, picking up assists on several key points. Kean managed to extend the set with a late push, but Christ delivered a clutch kill to give Widener the edge. Marquis sealed the set with a block on the final play, closing it out 28-26. 

  • Widener carried its momentum into the final set, jumping out to an early lead thanks to strong attacking from Martino and Matchett. Kean briefly closed the gap, but a well-timed service ace from Wannamaker sparked a crucial Widener run. Akinwale continued his dominance at the net, coming up with a big block to halt Kean's comeback attempt. With the score tightening late, Matchett delivered a decisive kill to clinch the match for Widener, winning the set 25-22.

The Pride will rest before another home game against the 5-12 Colonels of Wilkes. First serve is Tuesday, Feb 25 at 7pm.
