HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The opening set was a back-and-forth battle early, featuring seven ties as both teams traded points. Cairn jumped out to a 5-2 lead, but Widener quickly responded. Stephen Marquis and Matthew Christ sparked the attack, while Jason Sandberg delivered back-to-back service aces to tie the set at 11-11. A four-point run, fueled by a kill from Josh Akinwale and a block from Christian Wannamaker, put Widener in front. The Pride closed the set strong with key kills from Michael Martino and Wannamaker to take the opener, 25-21.

  • Widener dominated the second set, setting the tone early with a 6-2 run, led by Martino and Christ. The Pride's defense, anchored by Marquis and Sandberg, forced multiple errors, while the offense continued to thrive. A powerful service ace from Martino extended the lead to 12-5, and from there, Widener never looked back. Izaiah Rivera's serving sparked another run late, and the Pride cruised to a 25-14 victory, taking a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.

  • The final set saw Widener face its toughest challenge of the night, as Cairn battled to keep the match alive. Widener opened with a 4-0 surge behind Rivera's strong serving, but Cairn responded to keep it close at 10-9. Martino and Marquis came up big down the stretch, combining for multiple kills and blocks, while Kevin Stubbs added a key late kill to give Widener breathing room.
