Widener's defense was immediately tested as the Pride faced a flurry of early penalty corners from York. Goalkeeper Fithian stood strong in the cage, coming up with several key saves to hold off the Spartan attack in the opening minutes. Despite consistent pressure in their defensive circle, Widener continued to battle and clear away chances. Fithian recorded multiple stops in the frame, keeping the Pride within reach as York took a 2–0 lead into the end of the first period.

The Pride settled in defensively during the second quarter, with goalkeeper Fithian continuing to anchor the back line and making another crucial save to keep the deficit from growing. Widener earned a penalty corner midway through the frame, giving the offense a chance to generate pressure in York's circle. In the final quarter, Widener continued to fight defensively as goalkeeper Fithian remained a steady presence. Despite her efforts, the Spartans managed to find the back of the cage twice more in the period. Fithian turned away several dangerous looks, including back-to-back saves in the 50th minute, to keep the Pride engaged until the final whistle.
