Men's Volleyball Win Their Third Straight in Home-Opener

CHESTER, Pa. - Men's Volleyball keeps the win streak going with a 3-1 win in their home-opener against the Bison of Gallaudet. 

The Pride improve to 3-2 on the season and remain 0-0 in conference play. 
 

BY THE NUMBERS 

  • Michael Martino would have a great day hitting, finishing with a team-best nine kills and five service aces. 

  • Jason Sandberg was excellent passing, totaling 17 assists, an ace and a kill. 

  • Jarrett Edwards would be reliable on receives, leading the team with nine digs and adding an assist. 

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Widener would get hot quickly, scoring six straight on Jason Sandberg's passing before the Bison would get on the scoreboard. The Pride would stay in control of the set, as a 5-1 run would see them in front 15-4. A 7-2 Bison run late in the set would have them close the lead, but a Gallaudet error would seal the set for Widener 25-17. 

  • The second set would be much closer, as the score would be tied at 8 apiece to start. A 7-2 Bison run would have the Pride down 10-14, but Widener would score three straight to cut the lead to 13-14. Gallaudet would go on another strong run, this time 5-1, to take a 19-14 lead; and a Bison kill would finish the set 25-18. 

  • Widener would start the third set much stronger, as three Michael Martino aces would help the team to a 12-1 run set the tone. The teams would exchange scores for the middle of the set, but a 5-0 Pride run would give the team a 19-4 lead. The set would end the way it started, as Martino's ace would end the set as Widener would take it 25-10. 

  • The fourth set would be another close start, as the teams would be tied at 4 each early. The teams would trade scores, as errors would cripple the Pride, and the score again would be tied at 12. Neither team would manage a strong lead down the stretch, but a 4-1 Widener run would have them with a commanding 21-17 lead. A Josh Matchett to Yavan Patel kill would end the set and match as the Pride would take a 25-21 win. 

UP NEXT 

The Pride will take a trip to New York, N.Y. to participate in a tri-match against John Jay and Penn State Schuylkill. First serve is Saturday, Feb. 1 at 11 a.m.
